The New Zealand Medical Journal published three articles on Liver Transplantation in New Zealand in the 9th August 2002 issue.  These articles have kindly been made available by the New Zealand Medical Journal to us.

Caregivers website, June, 2002
"A website dedicated to helping New Zealand's 750,000 caregivers is up and running following financial assistance from the Health Ministry.  National advocacy group Carers New Zealand has designed the site to bring together 'a jigsaw of health and disability information', with a chat room for carers to discuss issues online, a message board and an online classified advertising service."  [From the InfoTech newspaper, front page, 10th June 2002].

April 2002

North Shore Times Advertiser, Thursday 18th April, 2002
"
Technician Andy Tookey can't fix up his little girl Katie - so he's trying to fix the system so she has a better chance of getting a life saving liver transplant.  Seven-month-old Katie Tookey was born with a rare condition affecting one in 15,000 babies. The ducts in her liver are blocked."

This article prompted a four hour discussion on talkback radio the same night and TV3 News are doing an interview about Katie on the 22nd April, 6pm News.

June 2001

Press Release, Tuesday 19th June
$60,000 donation to kick start new trust fund for liver transplant families
The Renai Brown Family Trust presented a cheque for $60,000 to the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit.  This will be used to establish a trust fund, where the income will be used for liver transplant recipients and their families.  The New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit looks forward to receiving further donations in the future "to the new trust to maintain it in perpetuity."

Child patients' journey ends.
An article by Martin Johnstone, Health Reporter for the NZ Herald, about the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit gaining approval to provide Liver Transplant services to children under the age of 7.  Before now, New Zealand children and their families have had to have these life saving operations done overseas.  Includes a photo of Professor Steve Munn, Director of the New Zealand Liver Transplant Unit.

"Diabetes effects many New Zealanders, epecially Maori and Pacific Islanders. If not properly treated it can be fatal. Diabetic Nikki Nolan got another chance when a friend donated her kidney, now she's speaking out about this common health risk."  (From the Holmes website)

Organ Donor Co-ordinator Ralph Maddison.
Ralph Maddison talked to Susan Wood about organ donation in New Zealand, including waiting lists and numbers of donors in a year.
